Meet Edyta

Edyta Niewinska is a writer, screenwriter and script doctor. Author of three novels: Kosovo (2012), Levante (2015) and Under the Surface (2o18). She holds a Master’s degree in Sociology of the Arts and is a certified NGO trainer in the area of human and minorities’ rights. She has settled in Andalusia, but she is continuously travelling. She is a member of ASECAN (Andalusian Screenwriters’ Association), member of the jury and the committee awarding nominations to the Andalusian Cinema Premios ASECAN (in the categories of documentary, short film, short documentary and books about the cinema) and she forms a jury at the film festivals in Spain. She is also a book critic and columnist for the literary magazine ZIO. She writes novels and reviews in Polish and screenplays in English and Spanish.

Her literary debut Kosovo (Mademesis 2012) was received with enthusiasm by both readers and critics and has been recognized as a self-portrait of contemporary thirty-year-olds. Her story One Night Stand, was published in the anthology Bookopen. Since a lot changes after thirty (Nowy Swiat, 2013), has established her as an author of psychological narratives written in simple sentences which cut deep under the surface of the words. Her next book Levante (BookFlow, 2015) brought her popular recognition as an expert on highly problematic issues. Her novel Under the Surface (Pisarskie Olsnienia, 2018) was highly regarded by the critics, among other things for the courage of raising the controversial subject of relationships resulting from codependency rather than love. Interpersonal relationships, sexuality, existential fears, a search for one’s own self and identity and for lost time—all of these are well known challenges to readers, challenges which Niewinska addresses in a courageous and uncompromising manner.
