TAKE what you NEED. LEAVE what you DON’T.

“We often fill our basket with so many things (e.g. tasks, responsibilities, projects, etc.) that the basket is already full by the time we find something meaningful to us. A credible & powerful case to be selective, to say NO and to let go in order to make room for what is truly meant for you.”

by Diana Mereu

Welcome to the season of giving. It’s merry, it’s bright and flooded with Christmas spirit, which often translates to overbooked events, mandatory gatherings, long shopping lists, presents overload and excessive commercialism. Don’t get me wrong – I am no Grinch. If I could choose, I’d be Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It’s just that it took me a while to learn the meaning of “less is more”. And that applies not only to holidays, but to day-to-day life.

Life is a practice of letting go – but that doesn’t come either easy or fast because we usually free ourselves of tangible or non-tangible aspects of our past, that have become a part of us and made us who we are today. We’ve been taught for so long that life is about accumulation towards building a solid reputation and a stable household, that we now assess the quantity of money, possessions, relationships we have rather than the quality of these.

We take more tasks, responsibilities, projects as a means to prove success, while we see every dismissal, rejection, failure as a weakness or as the inability of one to cope with society’s standards (AKA societal pressure). I am not contesting the empowerment that comes with having more money in the bank account, a bigger house or a faster car. What I am actually debating is how many meaningful things to us we do in order to attain them.

The choices we have today are unlimited and they give rise to different wants. Wants are desires while needs are necessities. Harnessing more attention on what really counts gets us more in tune with our real selves. Moreover, in order to receive what comes our way, one should have physical or emotional space decluttered. That can be achieved by focusing on our WHY – once that clear, the selection automatically aligns with the end result.

What to say YES to?

  1. Selectivity – choose what is the most suitable, available, accessible from a time & space perspective
  2. Value alignment – check only those boxes that honour your happiness and foster your wellbeing
  3. Positive vibes – surround yourself with family and friends who lift up the spirit and light up the mood
  4. Self-care – proactive approach to care for one body, mind, spirit by engaging in nourishing practices

What to say NO to?

  1. Expiration date – just like with expired medicines, throw aways safely what doesn’t serve you anymore
  2. Naysayers – respect the decision of those who no longer choose you back without challenging status quo
  3. Energy drainers – protect energy level from whatever keeps you from evolving and recreating yourself
  4. Patterns – break the chain of circle cycling by identifying and releasing emotional or physical triggers

To put it in a nutshell, it is not necessary for what is truly meant for you to find you in a place of peace and clarity, but you need peace and clarity to assess if something is meant for you. On another note, balance well what you choose to let go of, else you’ll end up adding more on your plate in order to compensate. Last but not least, aging distils you to your essence, so make sure the story you tell your grandchildren starts with “what IS” rather than “what IF”.
